March 5-6, 2025. Hosted by RISE in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Data Visualization

Turn your results into visuals that inform—and persuade. Join the YEAR (Young European Associated Researchers) network for a two-day, hands-on workshop on effective research data visualization. You’ll learn how to select chart types, use color strategically, and adapt figures for posters, journal articles, and conference talks. Bring your own material (or examples from your field) and get expert feedback.

The workshop is organized with RISE and run in collaboration with Moa Kristiansson from Visualize Your Science, a Nordic company specializing in scientist-to-scientist visual communication.

When & Where? The training will be held at RISE in Gothenburg, Sweden, on March 5-6 2025.

This training has a maximum of 30 participantsYour YEAR ambassador needs to confirm your participation.
This international event brings the added value of networking among multidisciplinary Young Researchers, from the 9 YEAR members (AIT, CEA, INESTEC, RISE, SINTEF, TNO, Tyndall, VITO and VTT).

Agenda (preliminary)

Thursday, March 5th

  • 12:00-13:00: Arrival and Lunch
  • 13:00-13:30: Opening & introduction to YEAR and the trainer
  • 13.30-14.30: Introduction: Visuals in science, Graphic design, Colors, and Visual perception
  • 14.30-14.50: Coffee break
  • 14.50-16.20: The role of data visualization in research & Practical data visualization – How it should be done
  • 16:20-16:30: Short break
  • 16.30-17.30: Project work part 1 – Redesign your data visualizations (group exercise)
  • Evening: Social dinner (details sent out to confirmed participants at a later date)

Friday, March 6th

  • 9.00-9.45: Data storytelling, make graphs that communicate
  • 9.45-10.30: Project work part 2 – Adapt the visualizations to tell a story (group exercise)
  • 10.30-11.00: Coffee break
  • 11.00-12.00: Tutorial: How to make design improvements to graphs, follow along on your own computer (for this you need Inkscape installed)
  • 12.00-13.00: Lunch
  • 13.00-14.15: Presentation of projects, Recap & Final tips
  • 14:15-14:30: Recap and final words from YEAR

To maximize the value gained from the practical exercises, make sure to bring:

  • Some data to visualize: This could for example be printed data visualizations/graphs from your own research (together with an explanation/caption of what the graph is), or an article containing graphs, or a poster, or some other printed material with data visualizations or graphs on them. If you do not have your own data yet, you can bring articles from your research group or from someone else in your field of research. The most important part is that there are at least a few different data visualizations that you can work with, and that you are familiar with what the data in them is about.
  • Your laptop and mouse (for Inkscape tutorial).
  • Download and install Inkscape before the workshop.

ABOUT THE TRAINER

Dr. Moa Kristiansson holds a PhD in Physics from Stockholm University, where she specialized in experimental atomic physics, investigating the intrinsic properties of atoms and ions. She currently serves as an instructor and visual communications expert at Visualize your Science, where she leads workshops, creates educational content, and develops approaches to data visualization. Her research background and deep understanding of physics taught her to translate abstract scientific ideas into clear, compelling visuals. Moa also continues her academic pursuits as a part-time guest researcher in atomic physics at the University of Gothenburg.

Looking forward to seeing you in Gothenburg!
